You can find mugs in all shapes, sizes, and designs. But have you ever wanted a mug to have a certain design and you can’t find it anywhere? Reese Witherspoon posted a coffee mug on her instagram that said “call your mother”. I thought that was the most adorable thing. I looked online for that mug and I couldn’t find one. So I resorted to making my own. Sharpie mugs have been floating around Pinterest for a while now. They are so easy to do and you can make them whatever your heart desires. I ended up making my mom a mug that said “call your daughter” and gave it to her for Christmas. (I also have some for sale in my Etsy shop!)
What you need:
• White mug
• Sharpie oil based paint markers
• Hand sanitizer
To do this project you need a white coffe mug. The cheaper the better since more expensive mugs have a thicker coat of glaze and don’t take the paint markers as well. I’ve found plain white mugs for 1-2 dollars at Home Goods, Tj Maxx, the Dollar Store, and Goodwill. These Sharpie oil based paint markers are fabulous, they work so much better than regular Sharpies. You can buy them at Joann’s or Michael’s.
First, wipe down your mug with the hand sanitizer before you begin. Once your mug is clean, start drawing your design. I did a mermaid theme. You can do something simple like my “call your mother” mug or something with more detail. The great part about this project is you can make it whatever you want! Turn it into a whale, it’s your choice. And if you mess up, just wipe it off with the hand sanitizer.
Once you are done drawing or writing whatever you want to put on your mug, it’s time to put it in the oven. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Put the mug in while the oven preheats and cook it for 30 minutes, then turn the oven off and leave the mug in to cool off. You need to cook your mug so that the Sharpie will stay put after you use it and wash it. These mugs make the perfect gift too. They are so easy to customize. I think I’ll make one for everyone in my family. Lol, I’m obsessed with these things.
What design will you put on your mug?
