DIY Beaded Necklace

DIY Boho Beaded Necklace by Jenny Bess of Sweet Teal

Jewelry is something that can either be fun to make or very frustrating to make. I’ve had past experiences trying to make wire wrapped rings and I could NOT get the hang of how to wrap a jewel that didn’t have a hole already in it. It was so complicated and pretty time consuming. It can also be challenging to work with tiny pieces, which is essential in jewelry making.

I decided to give jewelry another shot when I decided I wanted to make a long beaded necklace with a bohemian vibe in mind. I came across a marbled arrowhead charm and some marbled beads at Michael’s and knew they would look great together. I already had the rest of the supplies at home so I took to it. Here is how I made this DIY beaded necklace and how you can too!

Do It

step one

Make two separate strings of beads on the wire. I rotated using the black beads and the clear beads and then on the bottom of each string I put six black beads.

step two

On one string, make a loop on each end of the wire like below. There is an easy to follow video on how to do this HERE (it’s how I learned). All you do is make a loop with your pliers and then wrap the end around itself. I tucked a little excess of the end back into the bead. Repeat this process on the other bead strand.

step three

Put a few pieces of the chain on the end of the wire connecter you just made. Use the pliers to open and close the chain pieces to connect them to the wire. Then connect the end of the chain to the other end of the second bead strand. I put three chain pieces, you can choose how many you want or if you don’t want to put any at all you could just connect the two wire pieces.

step four

Connect a piece of the chain to the other ends of the bead strands. I made my chain 16″ long. I didn’t put a clasp on my necklace because it easily fits over my head and I didn’t see the need to. In the end, my necklace is a total 19.5″ long, including the charm.

So what do you think? Do you love this necklace as much as I do?! I think it has a cool bohemian vibe to it. I love the marbled look of the black beads and the charm, which I got from Michael’s. They have a lot of cute charms there right now. I almost bought some teal quartz slice charms. Maybe I’ll go back and grab some for earrings. I’m really enjoying jewelry making right now!

See this necklace in my Billabong post, it makes a great piece of beach jewelry!
