Ivory Closet is an online boutique that also has 3 storefront locations. It was started by Alexandra Nicole, a fashion, beauty, and lifestyle blogger, who you may know from City Chic Living. Alexandra is the sweetest girl boss who basically does it all. I got the chance to ask her a few questions and you can read her answers below. But first I want to talk about the clothes! Ivory Closet has women’s clothing, accessories, beauty, and gifts. They are constantly bringing in new arrivals and they just keep getting cuter and cuter. The clothing is very bohemian and on-trend while also being affordable. It’s my kind of stuff.
1. What came first, the blog or the store?
The store came first and the blog started as a marketing medium for the shop. I soon learned how much I LOVED to blog and the project became more of my personal site with product reviews and suggestions, fashion inspiration posts, mommy posts, business posts, and my inspired moments shared with others all together! I still feature The Ivory Closet products on the blog but have partnered with many other brands as well. I have had a blast learning more about the evolution of brand marketing through the influencer medium in the process!
2. Being a blogger, how do you incorporate your store with your blog?
I will generally feature Style Trends or Makeup Tutorial videos. I then use this content to email out to our The Ivory Closet Style Club email list. I also love to collaborate with other bloggers and send them products to shoot and post in so that I may share their posts with all of our in store and online boutique followers and email list. Our customers love to see influencers from all over the US in our products and often become fans of those bloggers!
3. What advice do you have for someone who wants to start their own clothing business?
Be prepared to work every single day for the first few years….but honestly, that is with any business. Becoming a business owner is super easy, it just requires a business license, which anyone can get, but actively working as a business owner and running a successful business is totally different! It requires tireless hours and persistence but it WILL pay off! You just have to weather the storms that will present themselves in the early years while you learn by trial and error. Then you have to remember to always remain flexible as the playing field is ever changing. A successful business is one that can adapt in it’s environment…but hey, isn’t that true with anything? Humans? Survival of the fittest right!?
4. You wear other brands on your blog, do you draw inspiration from those brands when picking items for your store?
TOTALLY! I will often work with those brands to bring them in to the shops! Sometimes the price point of the brands are out of our buyer persona scope, therefore I look for similar styles and pieces to bring in to the store.
5. What’s the future like for Ivory Closet?
A new platform for small store owners. Right now we are an online and brick and mortar store with 3 locations and a creative suite, however, I LOVE the business aspect of the boutique industry and I want to develop a new way for us small shop business owners to thrive in the evolving world of retail where there are tons of big box brands with deep pockets. As small shop owners, we seem to be loosing share of the market, however there is still a place for us and I am making it my goal to come up with a successful roadmap and share with others! Maybe a book, or a class? Or enhancing our franchise program? Not sure, but that is my focus moving forward!
What I’m Wearing from Ivory Closet
The dress I am wearing can be worn so many different ways. My favorite is with a belt. I wore it with a cotton rope to give it a nautical touch but have also worn it with this belt, making it more western. I tucked the lace-up ties in but you can wear them out and tied in a bow too! The quality is great and it’s super comfortable! Comfort is a must in my wardrobe so this dress will definitely be a staple.
