Apartment living rooms can be pretty small. That’s why it is important to make the most of what you have. I’m sharing my favorite space saving tips and tricks and letting you know how to make the most of an apartment living room. Decorating a tiny space can be difficult but it doesn’t have to be.
I’ve struggled in my past few apartments/houses with how to decorate in a way that would not only look good but be functional or make the room appear larger than it is. With my experience of hits and misses, I think I have a few great pointers to give. In addition, I’ve included an apartment tour video at the end of this post as well so you can see my apartment in action!
Correctly Sized Furniture
I hate to burst your bubble but that huge sectional that looks oh so comfortable most likely will not fit in your small apartment. There is a time and place for that one (in a bigger house) so for now, you need apartment sized furniture that will fit. Opt for a medium sized couch and a king sized chair instead. I got the Saxon King Chair courtesy of Apt2B in white with natural leg finish and it is the perfect size to add more seating to my living room without being too overwhelming. It fits like a glove right by my window. I love how you can customize the chair to your liking by choosing the color of the fabric and legs. I can’t express enough how comfortable this chair is and I think everyone should have one. Seriously, I have been sitting on it non-stop since it was white glove delivered. When I’m not on it, Colt is. Needless to say, we are obsessed.
If you have trouble finding the right sized furniture for your living room, I suggest making it or getting it custom. Most of my furniture is either made by my boyfriend and I or bought custom made. This ensures you have the exact size you need.
Another big part of making a room feel bigger is to not have dark furniture. Keep it light and bright since dark furniture creates a more closed space. I have mostly white furniture and a bright blue couch. My king chair is bright white and I do let my dogs on it (yes, I’m one of those people) but I prefer white because if there is a bad spill I can just bleach it. You can’t bleach brown.
Mirrors work wonders for making a space appear larger than it really is. I have mirrors put in small spaces throughout my house. A large mirror in the living room is a necessity for me.
Get items up off the floor or taking up space on a table by hanging them. I have lights hung from the ceiling in my apartment which not only adds height but also frees up useful floor space. In my living room, I have only one side table and on the other side is my light hanging over a pineapple plant, aloe plant, and a small tree. I have some plant hangers that I plan to hang soon to add an indoor garden. Which takes me to my next tip…
Make your living room have multiple purposes. It’s a space for relaxing and gathering but make it useful too. I have a desk with one of our computers that doubles as a craft station. I sew on it, we make t-shirts, and do work on it. With a small apartment it can be hard to find the space to have an office so I decided to place it in the living room. I made sure it matched the decor and it fits seamlessly.
Another purpose you could give your living room is an indoor garden. You could either make a planter to place by a window with herbs or you could hang plants to save space!
I love the above picture because you can really tell just how comfortable this chair really is. Look how plush! It’s almost like sitting on a cloud.
Now for the video tour…
