The time is now to start purchasing from ethical, sustainable, and eco-friendly brands. Just by becoming aware, you’re taking a step in the right direction to help save our oceans, planet, and people. I put together a list of 10 brands that put these things into practice to make it easier for you to shop swimwear, just in time for summer. A lot of these brands use ECONYL, a 100% regenerable & recycled nylon yarn from post consumer materials like fishing nets, or a similar material. By using recycled materials, putting forth good business practices, and caring about workers and the environment, eco-friendly and sustainable brands are worth buying into. Wouldn’t you rather buy from a company that does good for people and the planet? I know I would, and do!
1. Mara Hoffman
Mara Hoffman is a brand that cares about not only the environment but also ethical business practices and the people making the garments. You can learn more about the exact eco-friendly fabrics they use here. Mara Hoffman has the most gorgeous prints that make the pieces look like works of art. I am in love.
AMARA is about being innovative, sustainable, and ethical. They incorporate a lot of solids and patterns in their swimwear that compliment and add a touch of uniqueness. And everything is reversible! Talk about a two-in-one. They use ECONYL Italian fabric that is manufactured in a green energy facility that works to reduce pollution, protect green spaces, preserve water, and monitor gas emissions. Designed in Tulum and made in Mexico by local artisans, they give back to the community by providing livable-wage jobs and organizing beach cleanups.
Cantik‘s 2017 collection welcomes the use of ECONYL. A lot of pieces are on sale right now so hurry! I recently bought their String Along top and bottoms in Camel and it’s the perfect bikini for tanning (I’m wearing it in these photos). I do recommend sizing up though. My favorite is their Astrology Top. They use super cute patterns and the bikinis are made to flatter.
The more affordable eco-friendly option on this list is from ASOS. A lot of their pieces are made with sustainable fabrics made from recovered fishing nets and other waste material. Their Eco Edit also includes other sustainable brands to give you a huge variety. They cater to regular, tall, petite, maternity, fuller bust, and more. You can score a top for only $15, pretty great deal!
Abysse was started by Hanalei Reponty from Tahiti who is a surfer, ocean lover, and model. Abysse was designed for the tomboy at heart and incorporates prints such as paisley and checkered into the suits. With bikinis, one-pieces, rashguards, wetsuits, activewear, and t-shirts, they have it all. Paisley prints. They use eco-friendly and recycled fabrics.
Skatie is a little different from the rest of these brands. Most of the fabrics they use are 100% surplus fabrics. They do this because the amount of water, energy, and chemicals that go into the process of making fabrics are very large. Using surplus fabric that would have probably ended up in landfills. They also manufacture and source everything locally to regulate and reduce waste. I am obsessed with their Beaded Lynn one-piece.
SLINKII was created by Pia Muehlenbeck & Kane Vato, also vloggers. Sustainably produced from 100% regenerated nylon, their swimwear line is eco-friendly and very flattering. SLINKII is also activewear made with organic cotton and yoga made from jute plants and natural rubber.
8. Okay Pretty
Made from ECONYL, Okay Pretty is an Australian brand that has girly and unique prints and designs. High-waisted? Check. High quality? Check. If you love polka dots, palm trees, and bananas, be sure to drop by their site and check out their current line!
9. Vitamin A
The way I would describe Vitamin A is classic and versatile. Their suits are designed and produced locally in California. Vitamin A also gives back a portion of proceeds directly to environmental organizations who help to protect our oceans. In addition, they use fabrics made from recycled nylon called EcoLux. They believe that style and substance can coexist and that is amazing. To reduce their environmental footprint, they employ waterless digital printing technology and incorporate other sustainable materials into their beachwear like recycled cotton.
Each garment by Faithfull The Brand is designed, sourced, and produced in Bali. It’s all handmade by family run factories and they use hand-dying and hand-printing. By using an earth-toned color palette, it calls for fewer chemicals used as dye, helping the environment. The swimwear is the type that won’t go out of style and you can wear for years and years to come.
If you care and want to start making a difference, you can do so now just by shopping consciously. Start reading “About” pages on the websites you shop or do a little research to find out the practices your favorite stores use. It can be a bit more expensive shopping eco-friendly brands but that’s because they don’t skimp on quality or working conditions. Wouldn’t you rather buy something that lasts for 10 years and beyond over something that falls apart the first time you wear it or wash it? Shop smart, people!
