When I first moved into my house a year ago, I had zero furniture. For the first two weeks we didn’t have a dining table or chairs. My Dad was nice enough to buy me a few items and one was a dining table with 4 chairs. We just got a cheap set from Walmart for about $125. (It’s now on sale for $109.) Now that I am moving again in two months, I want to redecorate and have a beachy vintage theme. I don’t want to buy any new furniture, my goal is to do DIY projects and work with what I have already.
So, I am using the dining table and chairs that I already have and giving them a makeover. This post is about the chairs. When I complete the table I will post that separately.
For the chairs, which were originally black with tan suede seats, I started by painting them teal. The paint I used is Liquitex Basics in Bright Aqua Green. I used a sponge brush to apply the paint. I didn’t want the paint perfectly solid on the chairs, I wanted to give it a sort of weathered look. After I painted them teal I decided I wanted them a bit lighter. I bought some Americana Decor chalky finish paint in the color serene from Michael’s and went over the teal. I quickly brushed the chalk paint on and left some teal showing through, since I wanted the weathered look. I fell in love with how the color turned out, it’s perfectly beachy.
For the seats I first imagined them being white so I bought 4 fabric quarters from Joann’s that measured 18″ by 21″. They were each 99 cents so I couldn’t pass them up. I figured they would be the perfect size to cover my seat cushions, but I was wrong. They came up short and I really didn’t want to spend more money buying yards of fabric. That’s when I remembered I had a ton of burlap just laying around screaming at me to use it. I ended up stapling the white pieces of fabric down on the chairs over top the tan suede, then the burlap on top of that. With the white underneath the burlap, it lightened the cushions up and gave them a nice look.
The table post will be coming soon, I can’t to show you what I will be doing to it! It’s going to look totally different. Stick around. 😉
