There is nothing better than going to the beach on a hot day and swimming in the ocean, or laying on the sand dozing off to the sound of the waves. The beach is a place that I like to escape to and let my worries be put on hold. Whenever I need some time to relax, the beach is always my first option. People like to be surrounded by things that make them happy and calm them. No wonder I decorate my home with a beach vibe in mind. The beach is my place. Having a comfortable and cozy home makes it that much better to come home to after a long day at work. It’s true, home is where the heart is. This DIY project uses seashells and adds a little touch of paradise to your home. Whether you want to add some more nautical things to your already nautical house, or you want to be reminded of the beach in a small way, this DIY is perfect for you. These seashell candles also make great gifts!
– Tea Light Candles (or candle wax & wicks)
– Microwave-safe Bowl
– Chrome Spray Paint (optional)
– Essential Oils (optional)
The first step is completely optional. I wanted my candles to be silver to go with the theme of my bedroom. So I spray painted them with Krylon silver chrome spray paint. You can choose to paint them any color you’d like or leave them all natural.
The next step is to pop the tea light candles out of their aluminum containers. The wicks will then come out very easily. You will need to place the wicks on the seashells that you want to become candles. Then with the remaining wax from the tea light candles all I did was chop them up to make them easier to melt by using a vegetable chopper.
To melt the wax down you will need to place it in a microwave safe bowl, I used a glass one, and then place it into a saucepan that is filled halfway up with water. Set the heat to medium-high. Use a metal spoon to stir occasionally. It shouldn’t take long for the wax to melt.
Once the wax is melted you can choose to add essential oils to it to give it a scent or just leave it unscented. I used a lemon essential oil and put about 13 drops into the wax. I recommend adding a scent to your candles. And if you are giving these candles as gifts, it is the perfect way to customize them.
When the wax is melted, you can then pour it into the seashells. Only pour enough wax in so that is doesn’t overflow. The wax will dry and then they are ready to use! The perfect nautical touch to any home. I love the way these candles turned out and I cannot wait to make even more.
