Leather choker necklaces have been making a comeback recently and I have to say, I kind of love it. I think they are a great way to add a little bohemian or 90s’ to an outfit. I really wanted to get one of these and I found one from Forever 21, but then I thought I could make my own instead. Turns out, I could, and I like the one I made myself even better. You can customize your own by adding your own charms to it. This DIY necklace is really simple to make and you can really add your own personal touch to it. Prep It:
- Leather cording
- Cord end caps
- Round nose pliers
- Charms (Mine are from Michael’s – Arrows)
You can get any size of leather cording, just make sure you get end caps to fit. I got all of my supplies from Michael’s. To start, cut your leather string. To cut at the right size, I suggest you first wrap it around your neck (like below) and go by that. Remember, you will be tying the strings in knot, so measure accordingly.
The next step is to put the end caps on. I found it easiest to first flatten the end caps out with my pliers and then put the leather on the center of the cap (under the hole) then fold the edges over on top of the leather.
Use the flat part of the pliers and squeeze the end caps so that they are secure on the cording.
Now just put your charms on! You can put whatever charms you want, they just need to have the little circle part that opens so that you can put them through the end cap hole.
I decided to throw a shark tooth charm on with an arrow to give it a little variety. To finish the necklace, wrap it around your neck twice and tie the two strands together in a knot. Don’t make the knot too tight though, to take it off you will need to untie it.
