A card box is a decorative way to store cards. You can put one out at a party so that everyone who attends can put their cards for the birthday person, or whoever is being celebrated, in it. Then the person who is being celebrated can take the one box home instead of 50 individual cards. It’s basically for organization and makes it easier to take home cards. I think card boxes are a great way to add some party decoration to a celebration. The best part is that they are easy to make!

Do It

The medium sized Priority Mail boxes are the perfect size to hold cards. They are free boxes that you can get from any United States post office. To start, fold your box and tape the bottom closed. To make the hole, measure how big a card is, or go off of where I marked mine, and draw lines so that you know where to cut. You can make the opening about an inch wide. Cut where I marked on my box below.

After the first cut, you can see where you will need to cut on the two sides underneath. Mark where to cut and then cut.

Then tape the top down to the rest of the box.

For decoration, I’ve found it easiest to wrap the box in something instead of painting. I’ve used regular wrapping paper in the past and it is a lot easier than using construction paper, but for these boxes I just used what I had on hand.

If you are going to use wrapping paper, wrap the box like you would a normal gift then cut where the hole is on top. You can punch through the hole with a pair of scissors then tape the edges under the hole.

For construction paper, you will need 4 pieces. I started by putting the top piece on first, taping it down, then punching through the hole with scissors and taping it in the hole under to the inside of the box. Then I did the long sides, using 1 piece of paper on each. For the smaller sides, I cut 2 pieces to fit and taped them down.

I made boxes for a graduation party for my youngest brother and two cousins. All three of them are graduating from high school this year! (A third box was in the works so it wasn’t finished in time for these pictures.) So for decoration I wrote with a sharpie words relating to graduating like celebrate, congrats, success, their high school name, and just other words I thought fit. I wrote “Graduate” on the front and their name in big letters on the backside. For the sides I put graduation stickers I got from the dollar store. I topped off the boxes with star balloons I also got from the dollar store and wrote their names on them with sharpie.
