We are becoming more aware of the things we eat and where they come from but there is still a huge problem with the beauty industry. You wouldn’t eat something full of toxins and bad chemicals, so why would you put it on your skin? Our skin is the largest organ on our bodies and we need to treat it just as good by using clean beauty products.
So many beauty products are full of ingredients that are harmful to us. Certain ingredients can impact our reproductive organs, cause our allergies to flare up, and even cause cancer. Not to mention, make us breakout and have pimples everywhere. I bet you didn’t think your face wash has something to do with how much acne you have? Well guess again, it could be the reason.
I’ve switched my essentials to clean products and when I say clean, I mean free of sulfates, SLS, parabens, formaldehydes, phthalates, and so many more. Download the Think Dirty app and you can search products for a breakdown of all the ingredients and if they are harmful. It also rates products so you can know quickly if something is safe to use. It’s not safe to go off of a product just by the label or name. If it says “natural body wash”, best to check the ingredients to see if it really is natural. A lot of products are labeled as “green” or “natural” but really they are just as bad as the ones that aren’t.
It can get a little overwhelming to research every single product you use and switch them out so I suggest doing the main products you use and start from there.
If you use something everyday, switch it for a clean alternative. Here are my everyday clean beauty products.
Clean Beauty Products To Use ASAP
1. Body Wash – The Seaweed Bath Co.
I think it’s safe to say that everyone uses a body wash. Do you know what’s in yours? I started using the Seaweed Bath Co. body wash in Lavender and currently use it in Citrus Vanilla and the detox one in Refresh, which I got my fiancé Will to start using. They all smell SO delicious and really hydrate. I’ve tried a few other clean ingredient body washes and they left me feeling dry or didn’t give me that satisfying lather like Seaweed Bath Co. does. It doesn’t break me out (grrr sensitive skin) and it lasts a while!
2. Shampoo & Conditioner – Innersense
I’m very, very picky when it comes to my shampoo and conditioner because I break out around my hairline, neck, back, face, pretty much anywhere my hair touches if I use something with certain ingredients. I don’t know exactly what my body seems to be allergic to but I know clean shampoos and conditioners don’t give me that problem. If you want to read more about how I broke out like crazy after using the wrong shampoo, check this post out.
For a while I was using Mermaid Perfume haircare and still really like it, specifically the vanilla scent. But I heard great things about Innersense so I gave it a try and OH MY I’m in love. I use the color awakening hair bath since I get my hair colored and the color radiance conditioner. It is probably my favorite scent ever, smells just like oranges. It lathers well and cleans hair perfectly without stripping it and making it feel dry.
3. Face Wash – Tatcha The Deep Cleanse
Face wash can be a tricky one since everyone’s skin is different. I’ve tried countless face washes and I’ve recently settled on Tatcha. I love the story behind the brand and how you can talk directly to Vicky, the founder, on Instagram. You get to see behind the scenes and how she explains each product. I use the Deep Cleanse and all you need is a little drop, less than a dime size. This means the bottle lasts for a long time so the $38 price tag is well worth it. It has bits of fruit exfoliant in it and it’s meant to unclog pores, hydrate, and help oily skin. Plus, it’s oil-free!
4. Deodorant – Lume Deodorant
I actually found Lume on Instagram in an ad that kept popping up on my feed. I don’t usually wear deodorant because I’ve found that it makes me stink when I otherwise wouldn’t. Weird, I know. But when I wear tank tops or sweat, I like to have something just in case and something that will help that sticky feeling. I’ve tried a few of the natural deodorants like Tom’s and I hated the residue they left and the feeling. Lume is like a lotion gel you put on to any area you don’t want to stink, not just your pits, and it drys quickly and doesn’t leave behind gross residue. The best part though is that it actually works! Zero smell throughout an entire sweaty day. It’s also aluminum free. I have it un unscented.
5. Face Serum – Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum
Face serums can get overwhelming since there are hundreds on the market. I recommend using at least one serum for your face to battle you’re biggest concern. Vitamin C works wonders for a variety of things like dry skin, acne scars, wrinkles, and discoloration to name a few. My biggest concerns are redness and acne scars and this serum has definitely helped, I can see a difference. I use the Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum every morning and night and in addition to my Tatcha cleanser, my skin has never looked better. I’m not bullshitting you. Mad Hippie is a safe bet for a clean beauty company if you are just getting into it.
6. Foundation – Pacifica Beauty Alight Multi-Mineral BB Cream
A clean brand I love is Pacifica because their products are high quality, it’s available in common places like Target and Ulta, and it’s affordable. Plus, they serve up clean beauty on the daily. The BB cream is 100% vegan and cruelty-free and has a built-in primer. It comes in one shade but claims to have specialized mineral pigments that instantly adjust to your skin shade so it works for many different skin tones. I’ve noticed it does color match but if you are super white it might be a little bit too dark. As far as it getting dark enough, I don’t know if it would since but it’s worth a try. It does go on pretty sheer so just one layer would even out skin tones. You can build it up to have more coverage but it isn’t by any means “full coverage”.
7. Eyeliner – Pacifica Beauty Natural Eye Pencil
Pacifica doesn’t just make great BB cream, they also make clean eyeliner. I use the brown eye pencil and it goes on smooth and stays put. It’s nice to know it isn’t toxic since it’s sitting so close to my eyes. It comes in black as well and seems to last forever. I’ve been using it for a few months now and haven’t had to sharpen it yet!
8. Powder – Burt’s Bees Mattifying Powder Foundation
Powders can contain harmful ingredients like led, talc and more that can clog pores and be the reason you break out so much. Using a safer alternative like Burt’s Bees will help you stay matte without harming your skin. I really like this one, it doesn’t cake up and I can reapply throughout the day and it looks flawless. It’s technically a foundation so you could wear it on it’s own or overtop another foundation. I’d say it has medium coverage but definitely not full coverage. I have it in the shades Vanilla and Bamboo (for when I’m tan).
9. Bronzer – Lily Lolo Pressed Bronzer
I have struggled to find the right bronzer that doesn’t cause breakouts and finally found a winner, of course I just needed to go the clean beauty route. This Lily Lolo Pressed Bronzer has the prettiest suntanned color and is very buildable without looking caked on. I have it in the shade Miami Beach.
10. Blush – Burt’s Bees Blush with Vitamin E
If you’re looking for the perfect bit of sun kissed color, go with this Burt’s Bees Blush. It’s infused with vitamin e and works well with sensitive skin. It adds a bit of pink to make it look like your cheeks have been in the sun. I put it on my cheeks, nose, and forehead to mimic where I would get sunburnt the most. It’s buildable yet lightweight. I have it in the shade Shy Pink.
11. Dry Shampoo – Hair Dance Dry ShampooHair Dance, it works just as well as the top competitors and it’s safe to use. It’s a powder, not a spray, so it can get a little messy. So wait to put that black top on until after your hair is grease-free.
12. Mask – Eminence Lime Stimulating Masque
I wanted to include a mask on this list because I know a ton of people who love doing masks. I’ve seen an improvement in my skin since using this Eminence one. I’ve been using it for around a year now and really love it. I do it once every week to two weeks. It might throw some people off because it’s a hot mask and produces a hot feeling in return. It has a bit of a burning sensation and leaves your skin bad-sunburn red for a few hours. Best to use it before bed.
13. Sunscreen – Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen SPF35
Sunscreen is something I’ve talked about on here before but a face sunscreen is something I’ve been searching for and finally found. It’s by Tatcha, of course. It’s called the Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen and it goes on smooth, perfect for a primer before makeup. It smells good, is not oily at all, and it blends easily. Most sunscreens go on white and thick but this one feels more like a primer. If you’re looking for a face sunscreen that doesn’t feel like a sunscreen, this is for you.
Be wary of ingredients like fragrance, parfum, alcohol, and dyes which are big irritators for sensitive skin. While your shampoo might smell fantastic, it could be the reason your breaking out around your hairline. It’s important to know what’s in the products we use because they could be leading to larger problems down the line. Always check with the Think Dirty app or research each ingredient yourself.
If you don’t care about clean beauty products and their positive effect on your skin, consider changing to be more eco-friendly for the environment. Companies who produce natural or organic products usually care about their carbon footprint and sustainability.
