A tropical nursery for a beach baby girl. Complete with mermaid dolls, seashell knobs, and seahorse hooks.

Ruby's nursery reveal

Not long after I found out I was pregnant, I got busy designing a nursery. I spent months redesigning the nursery into the perfect room. It makes me so happy seeing it finished and being able to enjoy it with my baby girl. We love to spend time in here as a family, dogs included! It’s nice having a large, soft rug we can sprawl out on and play and a big chair Will, Ruby, and I can all fit in for story time.

For the theme, I went with an underwater boho mermaid theme, or whatever label you want to put on it. I started with the turquoise ceiling after seeing a similar design on Pinterest and knew it would be so cool to do in Ruby’s room. It makes it feel like your underwater or even like its the sky. It can be interpreted either way! It added just enough color without being too overwhelming.

I added in raw wood materials throughout the room to make it all blend together, matching with the crib. Keep reading to see a list of where I bought all of the decor items!

In one corner I have a mirror, a beach picture that Ruby smiles at every time she looks at it, a record player, and a vase with a couple of palm leaves from our yard.

In the other, we put two bookshelves that Will made, a chair moved from another room, and a nightstand with a seashell lamp I had been hanging onto for the perfect spot. I love that the bottom of the nightstand has a basket so we can store extra books. The nightstand was supposed to be white but they mailed a grey one. Instead of returning and waiting for a correct one, I ended up just keeping the grey which I feel goes better than white would have.

Ruby's nursery with crib

For above Ruby’s crib I put her name in wooden letters in one of my favorite type of fonts. The pink aloha sign adds in some color and the seashell ties it all together. I didn’t plan on putting the seashell there but Will held it up and it was meant for that spot!

We have the Lollipop camera that doubles as a sound machine. I wrote a review on it here.

The crib was given to us by a friend and we are so thankful. I didn’t know what it was going to look like until we got it and was thrilled because it’s one I would have picked out myself. For the crib mattress, I researched a ton of different options. I ultimately ended up choosing the Bundle of Dreams Orion mattress. One side is firm for an infant and the other slightly softer for a toddler so you can use it for a while. It was important to me to have something breathable, non-toxic, and made with organic cotton. It’s a great price and even water-repellent. I have a few Honest brand sheets in organic cotton too.

On the other side of her room is her dresser and changing station. We change her diapers with her in the basket on top of the dresser. I have diapers in the teal basket hanging on the wall and wipes and creams in the drawers. The diaper trash is to the left and I can’t recommend the Ubbi enough! It’s amazing and contains ALL the smells.

I opted for this setup instead of the typical changing table because I didn’t want to take up extra room or buy something that would only get used for one sole purpose then be obsolete.

The basket on the ground to the right is her dirty clothes hamper. All of her clothes, blankets, and extra supplies are in the dresser. The baskets on top of the dresser have bows, hats, and toys.

And finally, the chandelier! DIY chandelier that is! Yes, I made it and it's every bit as beautiful in person. It was actually very easy and affordable to make and I'll add in the tutorial once it's finished so you can make one too.

Now to tell you where I bought everything!

  1. Hi! Where did you get the hanging teal baskets?? Sooo cute! Redoing my 6 year old girls room in a coastal theme 😝 SO EXCITED!

      1. I don’t have a post on it but we just taped off where how far down on the wall we wanted the teal to be then painted Tame Teal by Sherwin Williams on the ceiling and top of walls. It’s not perfectly straight but you can’t tell!

    1. Amazon! I couldn’t find them available anymore but you might be able to find some, just search teal straw baskets!

  2. So cute! Thanks for the inspiration! I was wondering if you found (or made) a tutorial for the wood book shelves? Also, where is the blanket that’s over the crib from? Thanks so much!

    1. My husband came up with the idea for the bookshelves and made them. I don’t currently have a tutorial but I’ll put it on my list! I can’t remember where the blanket is from but the tag says Surya.

        1. I don’t! I made it because I was inspired by another artist that sells similar ones and was always sold out of them. I don’t think she’s selling them anymore either unfortunately.

  3. Love this!! Do you have a tutorial on how to make the book shelves? What type of wood and stain color did you use? Thanks!!

    1. I don’t currently have a tutorial but I can make one! The wood is just from Home Depot, I can’t remember what type but it was probably one of the cheaper ones. It’s actually raw wood, I never did any staining to it.
