When asked what kind of big girl room my toddler wants, she replied with, “A seashell room!” Thank goodness because I didn’t have to change too much! A big girl seashell bedroom is right up my alley and basically what she already has. I did change the layout a bit and swapped a few things out, like the dresser. Read on to the end of this post to see links for where I got everything.

For her new big girl bed, we looked at a couple different options and ultimately I let her choose between two different styles and two different colors. I’ve found toddlers like options but if you overwhelm them with options then it can cause chaos. So narrowing it down to just two options, then two colors helped her not get overwhelmed. She chose the pink seashell bed and it fits perfectly in her room. We decided on a twin size since her room isn’t very big and we wanted to allow her to have more space on the ground for play. If we were to do it over though, we would go with a full size! We lay with her each night until she falls asleep and a twin is barely enough room to fit her and one of us adults. So if you are debating between a twin and full, I’d say go with the full!
As for mattress, we went with 5 Little Monkeys. We purchased the 8″ Original Memory Foam Mattress + Bedding Bundle. I did a ton of research on mattresses and wanted to get something non-toxic that would last for years and be comfortable. I went back and forth between Avocado mattresses, My Green Mattress, and the Bear Cub mattress. I decided on 5 Little Monkeys since they are geared towards kids and created by parents who wanted to give their own children the very best kid’s mattress. They have a long trial period and I figured if we ended up hating it then we could return it and try something else. Price was also a factor and we didn’t want to spend $1000+ on a mattress knowing eventually she would outgrow it and get something bigger. I also love that 5 Little Monkeys had a bundle and we got organic cotton bedding and a stuffed monkey plush toy included!
For a top blanket, we got her a MakeMake Organics comforter. I did a lot of research on blankets too because I wanted to get something thick enough to keep her warm but something she could cover herself in easily. It also needed to be organic and made of either cotton or linen. We don’t do polyester bedding and it’s surprisingly hard to find quality bedding for kids that isn’t polyester. Polyester is plastic and I recommend looking into fabric frequencies and learning about why it is not ideal to use as bedding or clothing, especially for children. The comforters from MakeMake Organics are heirloom quality and even have organic cotton fill. I let my daughter choose which print she wanted and she chose the Safari & Wild print.

This nightstand makes a perfect stuffed animal storage. Thinking of different ways furniture can be used can be extremely helpful in kids rooms. It is easy enough for my 3 year old to take the animals out and put them back in. This was in my living room but we couldn’t fit it anymore with our new couch so I had to idea to move it into here because I didn’t want to get rid of it.
Highly recommend a Yoto Player too! It helps keep our girl in bed, listening to music while she falls asleep. It has been a great tool for keeping her in her big girl bed at night! We also have a red light bulb in this seashell lamp and a reading light she can easily turn on and off. We only use red lights at night and it benefits the circadian rhythm and helps you get sleepy without keeping you awake like bright fluorescent lights can. I use a red light for middle of the night feedings for our baby too!

Another great sleep aid tool we have used for a few years now is the Glow Dreaming device. It’s a red light, sound machine, and diffuser. I bought it when we were at our wits end with sleep when Ruby was waking up multiple times a night. It plays pink noise and the red light it puts off is the perfect amount of glow. She used to fall asleep looking at it. Years later, we still turn it on the lowest settings each night and she still loves it. We have tried lots of different sound machines and this one has the best sound that we all love to listen to and prefer.
Most of the things on her dresser are thrifted or made. I made the Eeyore in high school in a pottery class I took and it’s so special to be able to have it in my daughter’s room now. Thank you mom for hanging on to it all these years!! The pink seashell painting and the small seashell painting are made by me when I was pregnant with Ruby. The Ruby name painting was done by my sister-in-law, who you can get to commission art! She is amazing, check her out at @saras.canvas.

I found these little doll beach house figurines at Target a year ago in the dollar spot section. The rattan palm tree is from a Home Goods type store but I can’t remember exactly which one.

I had the idea to hang this shelf mirror in her room with her bunny chair as a getting ready station. It’s great for dress up and also makes it easy for her to brush her hair or put jewelry on. I’ve been hanging dresses on the wall for her to access herself and this one is from Taylor Joelle and they have THE BEST dress up dresses. Ruby loves wearing dresses, specifically princess dresses, and I searched a long time to find the best princess dresses that don’t fall apart after one wash because the ones you buy at the store all tend to do that. Every Taylor Joelle dress we have has been worn to sleep, to play outside, and worn days in a row and they all still look like new. Plus they are comfortable and not made with itchy fabrics. They wash well and are beautiful!

I also recently bought a linen sheet from Piglet In Bed and can’t recommend enough. I thought I had bought a fitted sheet but it was actually a flat sheet which I end up just using as a fitted sheet by tucking it in or use it as a throw blanket myself because the material is so nice. I definitely recommend Piglet In Bed for soft linens!

This room actually keeps changing and I add and remove items to best suit my daughter. I love that home decor can be changed and it allows me to use my creativity. If you have an ocean loving little mermaid, I hope you got some inspiration and ideas while looking and reading through this. Now I have to get to planning for turning this room into a shared room next for Ruby and her little sister!
